Biography

Dr. V. K. Khanna graduated from Delhi University and did his M.Sc and PhD from Haryana Agricultural University in Genetics, followed by Post Doctorate, CSIR. He joined as an Assistant Professor at G. B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar and worked there for nearly 30 years. He has more than 39 years of experience of teaching and conducting research on Wide-hybridization, Genetics and Biotechnology. He has guided 76 M.Sc and Ph.D theses and published 164 research papers in Indian and Foreign Journals of repute. He has also presented 193 research papers in Conferences/Symposia/Workshops in India and abroad, a few of them being Lead Papers including a Key-note address in an International Conference. He has been the Chairman/Co-chairman in many National and International conferences. He Chaired a session at the 7th International Congress of SABRAO and International Symposium of WSAA at Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China from Nov. 16-20, 1993. His group reported the mechanism of crossability between wheat and rye for the first time.

He has also published 57 Popular Articles and written 12 Books. He has visited various Universities and Research Stations abroad and presented his research work in conferences in Australia, USA, Germany, UK, Taiwan, Netherlands, Singapore, Russia, Thailand and Philippines. He was a Fellow of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of UN and worked on Molecular Markers and Genetic Transformation at the University of Queensland, in Australia. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Agrotechnology (Omics group), J. of Horticulture (Omics group) and some Indian journals and Reviewer of some Indian and Foreign Journals.

He was a member of the National Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation in the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. He has also filed a Patent with the National Research Development Corporation, N. Delhi. He has taught 24 P.G. and U.G. courses and is currently teaching ‘Molecular Cell Biology’, ‘Pr. of Cytogenetics’ and ‘Molecular and Chromosomal Manipulations for Crop Breeding’ to the P.G. students and ‘Principles of Genetics’ to the undergraduate students He has been the PI of 15 research projects.

Dr. V. K. Khanna is the recipient of many awards including the Best Paper awards in various conferences and the Best Teacher Award at India’s first agricultural university i.e. G. B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar. He was felicitated with ‘Vijay Rattan Award’ and Certificate of Excellence for Meritorious Services, Outstanding Performance and Remarkable Role by Dr. Bhisham Narain Singh, former Governor of Tamil Nadu & Assam at a seminar on Economic Growth & National Integration at New Delhi on 25th November 2005, by India International Friendship Society. He was awarded with ‘Bharat Vikas Award’ and Certificate of Excellence for Excellence in the Chosen Field by Hon’ble Smt. Mohsina Kidwai, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) on the occasion of the significant seminar on Economic Growth & National Integration at New Delhi on 31st August 2006, by International Institute of Success Awareness. He got ‘Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award’ and Certificate of Excellence for Meritorious Services, Outstanding Performance and Remarkable Role by Hon’ble Lt. Gen. (Retd.) T. P. S. Rawat, P. V. S. M., V. S. M., Minister for Tourism, Excise & Sainik Kalyan (Govt. of Uttaranchal) at a seminar on Economic Growth & National Integration at New Delhi on 31st August 2006, by India International Friendship Society. He was given ‘Gem of India Award’ and Certificate of Excellence for Meritorious Services, Outstanding Performance and Remarkable Role by Shri M. V. Rajasekharan, Hon’ble Minister of State for Planning, Govt. of India at a seminar on Global Participation in India’s Economic Development at New Delhi on 8th January, 2007 by India International Friendship Society. He has worked as Joint Director Research, In charge Govt. notified Seed Testing Laboratory, In charge Pantnagar Centre of Plant Genetic Resources, Acting Registrar, Acting Director Research, Acting Dean of College of Agri- Business Management, Acting Coordinator (Admissions) at G. B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar and In charge Dean at P.G. College, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Barapani, Meghalaya., and Chairman, School of Crop Improvement and he is continuing as Professor, Biotechnology at P.G. College, CAU, Barapani, Meghalaya.
