Biography

Dr. Xiaoping Luo is the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, Director, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, Tongji Hospital, Director of the Center for the Diagnosis of Genetic Metabolic Diseases, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Dr. Luo obtained his medical degree from Tongji Medical University in 1985. After graduate study, he stayed in the Department of Pediatrics of the affiliated Tongji Hospital and specialized in neonatology, and was appointed as an associate professor of pediatrics in 1992. From January 1994, he worked as a visiting scientist in the Division of Genetic Metabolic Diseases in the Department of Pediatric Laboratory Medicine in the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. In July 1997, he joined the CIHR group in Lung Development and Neonatal Research, and the Lung Biology Programme in the Research Institute of the Hospital for Sick Children, as a research associate/scientist. He was appointed as an adjunct professor in the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto since 2000, before he moved back to China where he subsequently became a full professor and vice chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, Tongji Hospital. He assumed his current positions as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics in Tongji Hospital in Wuhan since 2003.

Dr. Luo is now the Vice President of the Chinese Pediatric Society (CPS), President of the Chinese Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism (CSPEM). He is also the past president for the Asia Pacific Paediatric Endocrine Society (APPES), Executive Committee member of the Global Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (GPED), Board of Directors for the Asian Society for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (ASIMD), Council member of the Growth Hormone Research Society (GRS). His main interests are pediatric endocrinology and metabolism, and neonatal/perinatal medicine. Dr. Luo’s research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and the World Diabetes Foundation, etc. He has published 48 book chapters and over 380peer reviewed articles, and served as editor or reviewer for 45 domestic and international medical journals.

Neonatology/Perinatology: Oxygen Toxocity; Oxidant/Antioxidant; Lung Development; Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy; Cardiomyopathy (doxorubicin toxicity, iron overload, reperfusion injury); Free Radical Injury and Lipid Peroxidation.

Genetic Metabolic Disease: Inborn Errors of Metabolism; Clinical Biochemistry; Mass Spectrometry; Animal Models; QA/QC; etc.
